ATTN MEN: You too are at risk of photodamage from the sun and blue light, aging concerns like lines, wrinkles, volume loss, and health concerns like skin cancer and chronic conditions from unregulated chemical ingredients. Take your routine from washing everything with shampoo, to pointed and informed skincare so you can put your best, healthiest face foward.

FACT: most men’s products are full of sketchy ingredients because of the intensive fragrances. Marketed towards masculinity and “strength”– men’s products often promote extra strength sweat control and/or  extreme odor protection, which increases the need for harsh ingredients and “trade secret protected” chemical fragrance concoctions.

This means, a single scent listed on an ingredient label can include anywhere from 50 to 300 unregulated, unknown carcinogenic chemicals, often linked to cancer and chronic inflammatory conditions. What’s more? Some “fragrance-free” products actually still contain it.

1. AVOID products with “parfum” or “fragrance” on the label. One of the worst product offenders? Deodorants. You may not be dry as a bone or radiating a musky scent, but you limit your exposure to hazardous ingredients (*Full disclosure, you may need reapplication. My advice: buy 2 sticks and keep one at work, no big deal). Alternative deodorants with natural scents include:

FACT: 1 in 4 Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer–the most deadly form, Melanoma, is the most common form of cancer in young adults, ages 25 to 29. In fact, a study by Brown University that followed 100,000 people over a twenty year period found that just FIVE serious sunburns between the ages of 15-20 increased their chances of being diagnosed with melanoma by 80%. Thus, both UVA and UVB protection is CRITICAL.

2. Wear sunscreen EVERY DAY. An easy way to do this is to buy a 2-in-1 moistirizer with SPF. I recommend:

FACT: Chemical ingredients are linked to lower sperm counts and male birth defects like Hypospadias (PROTIP, don’t google this later, take my word for it)Sperm Counts Decline by 50% since 1973 and linked to “chemicals in commerce.” One way to limit and control your exposure is by choosing better personal care products.

THE BOTTOM LINE. Keep it simple, keep it clean, get protected in 3 daily steps:

1. Cleanse OR exfoliate. Alternate and use exfoliator only on shave days to prep for closer shave.

  • PROTIP: Not showering pre-shave? Use a warm towel and gently press to your face and neck to open pores and soften hair to start.

2. Use a nourishing, fragrance-free shaving cream & after-shave. Goodbye irritating little red bumps and ingrown hairs.

3. Protect & Hydrate (see above for the 2-in-1 recs)

  • PROTIP: Beautycounter’s Counterman shave regimen will leave you with a smooth, nonirritating shave you and bae will LOVE—free of sperm depleting, carcinogenic ingredients. See their entire line for bath, body, face, and beard grooming!
